Recap records a voice channel and produces a written transcript with speakers identified. Built for meetings, staff calls and anything else worth having a record of.
Recording people’s voices has legal implications that vary by jurisdiction, and social ones that don’t. Tell everyone before you start. Recording is disabled by default for exactly this reason, and anyone can permanently opt out.

Enabling it

Requires Manage Server. Off by default, server-wide.

Recording

Aliases: begin / end. recap status shows how long it’s been running and who’s been captured. When you stop, the audio is transcribed and posted as a text transcript with speaker labels and timestamps.

Browsing past recordings

Aliases: history. Past recordings for the server, with their transcripts.

Opting out

Permanent, global, and applies in every server. An opted-out member’s audio is never captured — not muted in the transcript, never recorded in the first place.
Reverses it.
Opt-out is a personal setting, not a server one. No server admin can override it, and nobody is told you’ve opted out.

Practical notes

  • Only people speaking are recorded. Someone sitting silently in the channel produces nothing.
  • Transcription quality depends on audio quality. A decent microphone and one person speaking at a time make an enormous difference; five people talking over each other will produce mush.
  • Long recordings take a while to transcribe. A one-hour call is not instant.
  • Everyone in the channel can see that recording is active.
Set expectations before you start rather than after. “I’m recording this so we have notes” takes three seconds and avoids every awkward conversation that follows finding out later.
